John Stumme, left, kisses his husband Kyle Hanson in the state capitol’s rotunda immediately after the Minnesota Senate passed a bill making Minnesota the 12th state in the country to legalize gay marriage May 13, 2013.
It was humbling and inspiring to be with my spouse, friends, and strangers at our state capitol on this historic day. I went as a citizen. I had no client to please. I could put down my camera at any time, singing and cheering along (which I did, happily). But, after long hours of waiting, at that decisive moment when the news of passage was confirmed, I wanted nothing more than to be a documentarian. I felt that it was the greatest offering I could give to the sacred moment and to the movement.
